Have you ever woken up just exhausted? Yesterday was that day. I ached from shoveling snow and from twisting my knee when my car became stuck in the snow. Then as I was getting in my van to take my girls to daycare and school I slipped on black ice and slid halfway under the van and hit my head on the side of the door. Needless to say by the time I was ready to head to the service project my division at work was going to do, I wasn’t really in the mood to go. Looking back I am so glad that I did.

I arrived at the building we were meeting at and as I walked inside I saw rows and rows of bags lined up on shelves and people going through with shopping carts and pulling items. I saw my boss and co-worker and so I went over and followed them to listen to what was happening. We were at the warehouse for the @salvationarmyus Angel Tree project.

I was given the task to help with the bikes by tagging them, putting them in order, and then taking inventory and matching them with each family. There was every kind of bike imaginable, from tricycles to mountain bikes, with training wheels and helmets, Spider-Man themes, and one in a Frozen theme with a place for their doll to sit. Bikes to grant the wishes of many boys and girls. There were dozens to match up with wishes, and then we’d find extras brought in “just in case” another child might need one.

There were racks of coats, stacks of hats and mittens, and clothing in every size. Then giant boxes filled with dolls, Barbies, Disney Princesses, dinosaurs, cars, and every toy imaginable. More coming in all day long.

As I stopped to watch the volunteers in all the areas rushing around organizing donations and preparing them for pickup my heart became emotional at all the goodness surrounding me. In a world where it’s easy to become self-involved, I was witnessing true generosity and compassion. I was witnessing what I have been trying to teach my daughters about this time of year … our love …Charity.

May each of us remember the example our Savior displayed every day of His mortal ministry. He loved all men. Every one of us.
