Day Two: Kujichagulia (koo-jee-chah-GOO-lee-ah), self-determination. To define and name ourselves, as well as to create and speak for ourselves.
Habari Gani? Kujichagulia
In pondering this principle I’ve come to realize the immense blessing self-determination is. This principle is about “We reserve the right to define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves and speak for ourselves. Such a pledge requires honesty and an in-depth look in the mirror.”
My college instructor asked us in one class, “When you look in the mirror what do you see?” That has become very profound for me. I look in the mirror every day and ponder that – what do I see? Do I see what others have told me? For too long I did. Now I am starting to see the Allison I want to be. I’m seeing not only who I am but who I want to be and I am determining who and what that is.
