“How did a nice girl like me get into a mess like this?”
We all have people that we look up to and I am no exception. One of the individuals that I have always admired from a distance was Marjorie Pay Hinckley. I am sure this is not a surprise because she was an amazing woman. She was the wife of a prophet and a great speaker. And yes that is all true, but what I admire the most about this woman is her ability to laugh no matter the situation.
In 2004, her children agreed to release a book containing some of the letters she has written to her family through the years. When I learned of this book I knew I wanted to purchase it. Here I am 16 years later and my life has changed a great deal since purchasing this book but recently I felt prompted to pull it out and read it again. I started reading in the section “Letters from a Young Wife and Mother”. This section was from 1945 and Gordon and Marjorie had two young children and a newborn. No matter what the situation was Sister Hinckley had a way at looking at the positive and finding a way to laugh. Her son could be sick, and she’d find a way to laugh. The furnace wouldn’t be working and she would find a way to tease her husband.
I think we can all learn from her example … but not only did she laugh and joke, she knew when things were important and reveled in the gospel. May we all find something to take from this amazing woman’s example and use it to better our lives and draw closer to our Father in Heaven.
“The trick is to enjoy life.
Don’t wish away your days,
waiting for better ones ahead.
The grand and the simple.
They are equally wonderful.”
