As a single mom with young kids, my life changed, and having the time to scrapbook wasn’t available. As my girls are getting older, I realized that I didn’t want to miss out on documenting these important moments because they are quickly flying by, and there are many things I want to make sure I remember.
I started looking for a better way to document with my limited schedule. I discovered an app called Project Life created by Becky Higgins. I love Project Life and I want to talk more about the app, but I have had a few people ask me about how I organize my photos, so I decided that would be a good place to start.
With the advances in technology and the capabilities of our mobile phones, most pictures are digital, and most people do not take the time to print them out. I started playing around with my photos to find a way to organize them by month so that when I went to document them, they were in a format that was easy to use instead of searching through my Recent album.
Below is a guide on how I organize my pictures on my iPhone. The instructions are specifically for an iPhone but can be done similarly on an android phone.
If you are like me, your recent folder is full of thousands of pictures … everything from snapshots, professional portraits, screenshots, and more. Often you are not planning to use most of these images for your documenting project, which is why this organization project is so helpful.
The first thing you want to do is go to the photos app and go into the main menu.
At the top left hand corner of the screen there is a little plus sign. Click on the plus sign.
A pop-up menu will appear and you can choose to create a new folder or a new album or a new shared album.
For the purpose of this organization style, you should choose New Folder.
A new pop-up will appear with a place for you to name the folder. I choose to name the main folder for the year. So for our example, I will type in 2023.
A new folder will appear in your main album menu. Find the album and go open it up.
Once inside the folder click on the little plus sign. And when the pop-up menu comes on choose the option for a New Album.
A pop-up is going to appear again to name the album. You can choose any naming system that works for you. I like to name them by the months. In this example, you will see that I name my folders 01 – January, 02 – February, etc.
After you click save, a new window will appear. This time it will take you back to your recent album so you can go through and select the pictures you want to add to that folder. I choose the images that are the favorites that I will want to use in my documenting. When you select the image a blue check mark will appear on the image.
Once you have chosen all of the images you want to add to the folder click Add.
You can choose if you want to put all twelve folders for the year in at one time, or do one at a time as you go.
Once you have added a few folders it will look kind of like this. iPhones order their albums in the order of the newest added at the top. You can click edit and drag them into the order you want.
