| Growing up my mom was never a fan of nicknames.
She named me Allison and therefore I was to be
known by Allison. This could probably be the reason
that until I was in high school I never really
had any nicknames. My grandmother called me Peanut
and occasionally her and my grandfather would
call me Alioop, but other than that I was almost
always known simply as Allison.
I have always liked my name and am very proud
of it, but I have a great affinity for nicknames.
I think they are a way of showing personality,
fondness, etc for someone. And some of my poor
friends have ended up with some doozies and
probably hate me now because I have allowed
them to stick
sorry Spud Butt! ;o)
Here are some of the names that have stuck
with me through the years:
Alioop this name came from my
early years when my grandparents would hold
my arms and swing me as we walked and say Alioop
Ali this name is the most common
of my nicknames and of course is just an abbreviated
version of Allison.
Al this name had me joking with
my friends that each year I kept loosing a letter
and I predicted that eventually they would just
call me A.
The Checkered Spaz Alright this
one is a bit embarrassing yet one of my favorites
because of the memories associated with it.
When I was a freshman in high school and living
in California my friends and I attended a soccer
game at our rival school to support some of
our friends in the stake. I was wearing this
jacket that I absolutely loved (looking back
it was rather hideous) and was totally on one
that day. One of our friends teammates
said, What is up with the checkered spaz?
My friends had a good laugh over that and the
name stuck for the rest of the year.
Sherm or Sherman The first
time I was called this it came from Scott while
I lived in California
he said it like
an army general Sherman, Dang it!
Then on my mission it was abbreviated to Sherm
by Ned while I lived with him and Linda.
Bubba this one is grasping it
but it had to do with Bubba Gump Shrimp
from Forrest Gump.
Yolk Honestly I dont remember
exactly what the story behind this was. In college
my one group of friends called me this and even
gave me a cake that said, Happy Birthday
Yolk
Calberta Lovely Kate dubbed me
this. This has a whole trail to get to understanding
it. Allison shortened to Ali shortened to Al
connects to Alberta, Canada making it Calberta.
Personally I love it and it always makes me
smile when I hear it or read it on a card.
Anyway
nicknames are fun and I love
the bond I feel over the ones given to me by
my friends.
